In response to Tribal consultation recommendations, the Interdepartmental Tribal Justice, Safety, and Wellness Federal partners and offices have scheduled the next session, Government-to-Government Consultation, Training and Technical Assistance – Session 8 to be held December 8–10, 2008, in Palm Springs, CA. The Training and Technical Assistance session will address consultation issues raised and will begin with an all-day grant writing workshop on Monday, December 8. Tuesday, December 9 will include a general session to report on the progress we have made in the past five Tribal consultation sessions held in 2007–2008; an interdepartmental panel on the transition activities to prepare for a new Administration; and workshops sponsored by several Federal agencies to inform Tribes about funding notices, application submissions, audits and evaluations, the peer review process, the budget formulation process, and much more!
Since 2006, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), Native American Issues Subcommittee (NAIS) in the Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys (EOUSA), Office of Tribal Justice (OTJ), and Office on Violence Against Women (OVW); U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) through its Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Indian Health Service (IHS), Office of Minority Health (OMH) in the Office of the Secretary; U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA); U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through its Office of Native American Programs (ONAP); the Small Business Administration (SBA); and our newest Federal partner, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) have worked steadily to respond to the stated needs of the Tribal community through a series of Government-to-Government Consultation, Training and Technical Assistance (CTTA) sessions held across the country.
Fiscal Year 2008 — Government-to-Government Consultation, Training and Technical Assistance Sessions
November 2007, Santa Ana Pueblo, NM — Session 5 focused on FY 2008 grant solicitations and related information, detention facilities, and behavioral health needs and was held in conjunction with the OJP’s Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART) National Tribal Symposium on Sex Offender Management and Accountability.
March 2008, Washington, D.C. — Session 6 focused on public health and safety, drug awareness, Tribal court systems, detention facilities, multijurisdictional coordination and communication, sexual offender registry, data collection and management, and other wellness areas.
August 2008, Billings, MT — Session 7, titled Follow-up to Tribal Consultations: Continuing the Dialog, was held in conjunction with two national conferences—the 2008 IHS/SAMHSA National Behavioral Health Conference: Partnering for Native Wellness and the 2nd National BIA Conference on Child Protection & Child Welfare in Indian Country: Celebrating our Heritage for Future Generations. This session continued to emphasize justice and safety issues, while focusing specifically on health and wellness in Tribal communities. Session topics included traditional treatment, family and community development, parenting, historical trauma, child protection and welfare, and behavioral health.
Each of the sessions have responded to Tribal consultation recommendations regarding access to resources and meeting the challenges Indian Country faces in individual communities.

The Violence Against Women Task Force Meeting is scheduled to convene on Monday, December 8 and Tuesday, December 9 and is sponsored by the OVW, DOJ. Observers are welcome. On Tuesday afternoon, comments from the public are welcome. Persons wishing to attend must register.
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Annual Consultation Session will follow on Wednesday, December 10 and is also sponsored by the OVW, DOJ. This third annual consultation session will continue to emphasize justice and safety issues, while focusing on domestic violence and victims rights in Tribal communities. Individuals wishing to attend must register.
In addition to the above events, the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC), OJP, DOJ — 11th National Indian Nations Conference: Justice for Victims of Crime will take place Thursday, December 11 through Saturday, December 13, 2008. A Sex Offender Institute, sponsored by SMART, OJP, DOJ will take place on Wednesday, December 10 along with several other preconference institutes. Individuals must register to attend the conference and/or preconference institute(s).
